Tutorial:
Step 1 - Choosing the Motor Version |
|
Foredom offers
three different motor version. See below for a comparison.
Please read the
description for all three motor series, and then use the "Step 2" link
below the series that you would like to continue learning about.
The steps that proceed from this page will explain speed control,
mounting, and handpiece options. |
| |
|
Option 1: Foredom SR 1/6 Horsepower
Series Motor
(Reversible) |
The Foredom SR 1/6 Horsepower Series Motor (Max. Speed 15,000
rpm) is Foredom's most popular motor. It combines the most
important features - power, reversibility reliability and
versatility - all into one motor.
More
Power: The All New 1/6 hp, ball bearing Series SR has 33%
more power than Foredom's older 1/8 hp motors and 66% more than
Foredom's original 1/10 hp models. The added power helps
to reduce stalling or slowing down under normal workloads.

Reliable:
Two year warranty. Please contact Foredom directly if you have any
warranty questions of issues.
Versatile:
The Foredom SR, SRM and SRB all come with standard 39" long
flexible shafts and sheaths for connecting to any of Foredom's 20+
"Quick Disconnect" handpieces. (More details on handpieces will
come later in this tutorial. Again, if you choose the Heavy Duty
version - SRH, SRMH or SRBH, your handpieces options are more limited.)
Reversible: This great feature is not well understood by many users.
Advantages of Running in Reverse Rotation:
-
Left handed users have more control of the cutting tool when in
reverse
-
Reverse helps to keep dust and other debris flying away from
right handed users
-
ALternating motor direction helps to extend the life of certain
abrasives
-
Reverse helps with accomplishing symmetrical grinding and
carving techniques
-
Reverse makes it easier to back out drill bits that are stuck
-
Alternating motor direction makes it easier and faster to polish
metals.
SR motors are
available in both 115 Volt and 230 Volt. We sell the standard 115
Volt through our online catalog. If you need to change this to a
230 Volt, just let us know through email when after you place your
order. For international customers, other plug options can be
special ordered and fitted at the factory. Let us know if this is
a concern as well.

Option 2: Foredom TX 1/3 Horsepower Series
Motor
(High Torque at All Speeds) |
The Foredom TX 1/3 Horsepower Series Motor (Max. Speed 15,000
rpm) is more powerful with more torque power than the SR series,
because it has a permanent magnet motor. However, because
of this design, this unit is only available in 115 Volts, and
the unit is not reversible.
Reliable: Two year warranty. Please contact Foredom
directly if you have any warranty questions of issues. |

Permanent
Magnet: Foredom TX, TXM, and TXB motors are Foredom's most powerful
flex shaft machines. They have permanent magnet DC motors that
feature the latest in flex shaft technology. These ball bearing
models utilize advanced rare earth magnets (in place of the wound
fleilds in the universal type SR motors) that deliver more torque at the
low end and throughout the entire speed range of 500 to 15,00 RPM.
No other flex shaft give you greater control of the cutting tool, drill,
or bur under any load.
Foredom TX, TXM,
and TXB motors all come with standard 39" long flexible shafts and
sheaths for connecting to any of Foredom's 20+ "Quick Disconnect"
handpieces. (More details on handpieces will come later in this
tutorial. Again, if you choose the Heavy Duty version - TXH, TXMH
or TXBH, your handpieces options are more limited.)

Option 3: Foredom LX Series High Torque/Low
Speed Motor
(Up to 5,000 rpm) |
Foredom LX Series High Torque/Low Speed Motor (Up to 5,000 rpm)
is a re-engineered version of Foredom's L Series. The "X"
added to their name stands for extra power. These
permanent magnent motors (not reversible & 115 Volts
only) are specifically designed for low speed/high torque
applications and now offer more power for stone setting, wax
modeling, and pearl drilling.
Reliable: Two year warranty. Please contact Foredom
directly if you have any warranty questions of issues. |

|
|
Foredom LX, LXM,
and LXB ball bearing motors feature full power and torque from start up
and throughout the entire speed range up to 5,000 rpm.
The LX is Great for Drill Press & Hammer Hanpiece:
These motors are ideal for use with Foredom's drill press.

Foredom Drill Presses |
Series LX,
LXM, and LXB motors all come with standard 39" long flexible shafts and
sheaths for connecting to any of Foredom's 20+ "Quick Disconnect"
handpieces. (More details on handpieces will come later in this
tutorial. Again, if you choose the Heavy Duty version - LXH, LXMH
or LXBH, your handpieces options are more limited.)
